Scientific research has shown that tobacco products trigger mental illnesses.  Here are 3 mental health effects of smoking: 

 

Anxiety: If you think smoking calms you down, think again. Smoking can cause more  anxiety. It is believed that smoking helps with stress, however results are only temporary which will result in long term negative effects. Smoking cigarettes can lead to prolonged anxiety disorders as a result of the nicotine contained. 

 

Depression: 5 million Nigerians have been diagnosed with depression according to the World Health Organisation. Studies have shown that depression is linked to cigarette smoking as smokers  are likely to be more depressed than non-smokers. Smoking cigarettes can lead to worse stages of depression especially in highly emotionally draining situations. It is advised for smokers to seek psychological counselling than smoking. 

 

Insomnia: Nicotine is both a drug and a stimulant that’s contained in cigarettes and affects smokers’ sleeping cycle. Scientific studies have shown that people who smoke frequently experience shorter sleep or sleep disruptions. Insomnia Is a major factor that contributes to mental health disorders and is common with people who have anxiety, bipolar disorder and depression.
